random notes for my "Return of Torchwood Four" story.

Torchwood Four was the final branch of Torchwood to be opened. It was established to travel the globe and take care of any and all extraterrestrial incidents. It was led by an enigmatic woman called simply The Marshal. She hand-picked every member of her team for their intelligence, skills, and often times unique abilities. When the Torchwood Institute aquired the power of time and space travel, it was Torchwood Four who tested it out and made it one of their chief modes of transportation as well as a way to gather intelligence. However, it was this new technology that would be their undoing.
After aquiring time travel technology, Torchwood Four worked closely with UNIT.They also worked with the Time Agency on rare occasion (usually cleaning up their mess). Torchwood Four was officially declared missing in the year 1939 AD.
In actuality, the team had been on a joint mission with the Time Agency, working to correct problems the Time Agency had created. Later, when it was discovered that key persons in the "proper" historical time line were killed as a result of the Time Agency's original actions, four of the nine members of the TW4 unit were sent back in time (or forwards, depending on the point of view) to replace the lives that were lost, to help prevent a disasterous paradox. There were also two Time Agents chosen for the process, however their identities remained classified.
Torchwood Four remained "missing" despite resuming normal activities. The full team was not replenished, remaining four short until the late 20th century. One operative turned rogue and another was killed while on mission, cutting their number from five to three. Two more agents were recruited to replace them.
Currently, there are four active members of the TW4 Mobile Unit and one MIA.

STORY SETTING: The story takes place post Journey's End of Doctor Who and Series 2 of Torchwood. This is an alternate timeline, and will not include the events of the upcomming Torchwood miniseries "Children of Earth". It will make mention of events from The Sarah Jane Adventures through series 1, but not series 2 because I haven't seen it yet. The "year" for the story is 2010-ish. The "canon" characters of Jack, Ianto, and Gwen are used, as well as Doctor Who's Martha and Mickey to replace Owen and Toshiko.

PLOT: The Rift has been quiet for 3 weeks. Aside from the usual Weevil hunting, there hasn't been activity of any kind to speak of. While on a routine Weevil hunt, chasing down a notoriously vicious weevil, Gwen and Martha become infected with a strange "musk" and are rescued by a small band of gun toting alien hunters who reveal themselves to be members of Torchwood. The medical officer of the band is instructed to analyze mucus from Martha and Gwen's lungs, beleiving it may help them understand their prey better. Jack and his team, as well as these other Torchwood operatives convene in the boardroom where some questions are answered and many more are asked and left to ponder. These other operatives reveal themselves to be the missing branch Torchwood Four. All the while there is a rogue weevil on the loose, a strange alien wraith creature infecting humans and animals alike with its deadly musk, and Jack shags Ianto. Just a normal day at the office for the members of Torchwood 3.

THE TECHNICAL STUFF: This story will be in two parts of undetermined length. It will include a brief Jack/Ianto scene because it's been a long time since I've written anything like that just for gratuity. There has been much research into various items and technologies used by the characters, as well as "in-universe" themese that have been double checked. I will NOT be using spellcheck on this, because I hate using spell check. It will take place in the "Ripple Effect" mythos (which I am still developing) but in itself is a stand alone story.

History: Christopher Icarus Hawkins is a former Navy Seal. Dishonorably discharged following his refusal to obey a direct order from his superior. All that is known of the event is that his superior was ordering him to kill innocent civilians, something that didn't sit well with Chris. After being threatened by his superior officer with death for disobeying an order, Chris shot him in the kneecaps before being forcibly restrained. Chris became an alcoholic and drug addict following his discharge. Aside from his discharge, he had an impressive service record an was in line to be transfered to UNIT special forces. However, his discharge screwed this up for him. Four years after his discharge, he was aproached by a woman who called herself The Marshal, and offered a position at Torchwood. He refused at first, but was bribed into it when she made claim that she could clear his record and get him back into the Navy, and possibly into UNIT, provided he sober up and stop using. He was hired on replacing their former navigator and pilot Katerina. He was one of only two personel given complete access to Torchwood computers and technology (the other person being the Marshal herself) in the event of emergency.

History: Fumina Miho is a child prodigy, much like her senior officer Lucas Cuthbert. However, unlike him, she chose medicine over what she deems "trivial pursuits". She specialized in diagnostic medicine, following the work of Dr. Gregory House very closely while in medical school. She showed daring in her field, and the willingness to do anything to find answers and cure or treat a patient. She had just begun her practice when an epidemic swept across her home country of Japan. The epidemic was alien in origin and discovered to be highly contageous. She was steadfast in doing her job, and risked her own life to find an effective treatment for the deadly disease. She managed to create an odd coctail of medicines which not only supressed the symptoms, but also strengthened the immune system in the fight against the disease. She managed all of this before Torchwood was able to develop its own syrum. When Torchwood arrived on the situation, 3/4ths of the afflicted population were already cured, and far healthier than they had been before the outbreak. When they discovered she had been the one who did it, they were eager to snatch her up immediately. At Torchwood One, she was part of the team that developed Compound B67, Retcon. She revised the formula on her own after the fall of Torchwood One and created rather potent liquid and gaseous forms. Before she had a chance to return to Japan, she was picked up by Torchwood Four immediately following the loss of it's previous medical officer ADAM.

History: Lucas Cuthbert is actually the father of Archie in Glasgow. He was a child prodigy far too intelligent for his time. At age 15 he held doctorates in Psychology, Botany, and Biology. At this age, he was snatched up by Torchwood, where he was immediately placed into research and development. He later was assigned to Torchwood Four under the leadership of the Marshal. He is one of the few original members of Torchwood Four left on the team. His former comrade, a German woman named Katerina, married him when he turned 18. She died on mission months after giving birth to their son Archibald "Archie" Cuthbert. The Marshal forced him to give up his child, reminding him that theirs was not a life meant for children, especially babies. A few missions later, he did give his infant son up, leaving him in the care of an abbey in Scotland near where he had been a child, but not in his home time period. After UNIT was established, he became the official liason between TW4 and UNIT, as well as earning many more doctorates in far more advanced fields such as Physics, Astronomy, and Robotics. He is currently in a strange relationship with Alita and is the only member of TW4 besides the Marshal who know that she is an andoid from another planet and century.

Special Skill: can connect with primative (30th century and earlier) technologies and computers; analyze data at a rate impossible for humans to measure; she preffers non-violence, but will on occasion use any make of firearms she can find
Attacks: laser blast, sonic vibrations, and gunfire

History: G. Alita Stanwood is a pleasure droid from the planet Midnite. Her model is the highly prized "GEMMA" model, which is both anatomically correct and self aware. She fell through the rift and was badly damaged. She was picked up by Torchwood who after completing tests on her computer systems and phsical capabilities, reprogrammed her to use as cannon fodder in the field and reconnaisance. However, her logic engine proved to be far more valuable. She was confined to the labs at Torchwood headquarters and was used as a super computer. During this time, she was kept wired into the computer systems and used primarily as an AI. When Torchwood Four was set up, the Marshal, having pity for the poor, self-aware droid, comandeered her with the reasoning that since the unit was mobile, they would not have regular access to Torchwood facilities and laboratories. Alita would be of great use to her team, and would also be a way of keeping contact with headquarters with reports and regular transmissions. Alita assumed control of the unit when the Marshal went missing. She is one of 3 original members still part of the unit.
